Seul le prononcé fait foi
Dear Ministers, Members of Parliament,
Dear friends,
I’m delighted to be with you this morning for this discussion on this very important topic.
As we are gathered to discussion the one health approach, let me talk to you about what I use to call the three “ONEs”.
1/ The first is ONE world for all, or rather ONE village for all.
When we look at the world we are living in, we can see at least two things:
This leads to a first conclusion: In this world, only one approach counts: the integrated one.
2/ You know the second “ONE”: ONE Health.
The question is not whether there will be a next global pandemic, but when there will be one.
This health threat may come from a new, unknown virus. But it can also come from the resurgence of infectious diseases that we thought had disappeared, but which continue to threaten populations around the world.
For example, global warming is often identified as the main cause for increasing the probability of the emergence of a new infectious disease – a disease “X”. But the effect of climate change on existing killer diseases is not a theoretical future scenario.
Let me share an example of this: In Pakistan, the floods of 2022 killed more than 1,700 people. As a result of these disasters, malaria cases rose sharply, and deaths due to this disease far exceeded direct deaths due to the floods.
This means that if we want to protect our health, we need to act on all its components.
3/ And finally, ONE INSTUTE.
This is the project that brings us together today. As parliamentarian and as a member of the Club of French Parliamentarians United for Health, I can tell you that we need this tool.
Not only to have the necessary data, but also to be better prepared for the next crises and to take political hold of the issue.
It also seems important to me that this project should include the countries of the Global South NOX.
For too long, in the fight against pandemics, we have created a two-speed world: the North and the South. So perhaps I’ll conclude with this forth “ONE”, as a wish: let’s create ONE speed for all.
Thank you very much for your attention.
